The past few weeks on the US West Coast have been unbearably hot — reaching record temperatures — and smokey. As wildfires raged across California, Oregon and Washington, residents avoided going outdoors and kept their doors and windows shut.
The American population ages 65 and older is expected to nearly double from 52 million in 2018 to 95 million in 2060. The share of seniors in the US population is expected to increase from 16 percent to 23 percent. In 2019, California had nearly six million seniors over the age of 65 — greater than the entire population of Oregon!
In 2018, the construction industry had 1,008 worker fatalities in the private industry (or 21.1 percent of all fatalities in the private industry). According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, construction’s “Fatal Four” — falls, struck by an object, electrocution, and caught-in/between — were responsible for more than half (58.6 percent) of construction worker deaths in 2018.Read more
